Between The Sheet Music

There are times when you just have to do something special for the special people in your life.  My oldest grandson, Zander is one of those special people.  He's 14 now, and playfully looks down at his GiGi.  A few months ago he started to play bass guitar on the platform in the Sunday morning service.  My heart swells each morning that I see him there.  And when I help lead worship, standing there with Zander, and my son on the acoustical guitar, I feel so very blessed.  Often during practices I turn to take a peek at Zander, and am so proud of the young man that he has become.

The bass that he has been playing is owned by the church.  I didn't realize that until my son mentioned that Zander would like a bass guitar for Christmas.  My immediate thought was that it wouldn't be fair to all the other grandchildren if I bought him such a special gift.  But the more I thought about it, and the more the Holy Spirit coaxed me, I knew that I should consider at least looking at what the Guitar Center had available.  At the time of the conversation with my son about what Zander wanted for Christmas, I was up in Grand Rapids shopping with my daughter.  So, together, we went to the Guitar Center on 28th St.  I didn't even know what a bass guitar looked like, so we had to seek the help of one of the clerks.  We looked at so many, and all the time there was this nagging in my brain about 'fairness'.  Gosh, it seems like we were there a long time.  I kept thinking, no, I shouldn't do this.  Then my daughter spoke up and said 'we should go in together on it'.  Suddenly it all was clear, Zander would have a beautiful new guitar.  Kathy spotted one, a Yamaha, that really looked way out of our league, but as it turned out it was within our price range.  It helped that the clerk told us the color was 'Root Beer'.  Zander loves Root Beer!  That was the clincher.  So off we went with a beautiful shiny bass guitar in our back seat.

It was a gift that I didn't want to wrap, so I devised a plan.  I would hide it somewhere, and the present he opened would be a clue to where the guitar was hidden.  So, with store flyers in hand I cut out letters and pasted them to a piece of white cardstock.  The front said 'Clue To Your Christmas Present'.  And inside were the words 'Between the sheet music'.  Oh yes, I was rather proud of myself to have come up with that.  The guitar, of coarse, would be snugly nestled between the sheets of our bed.

On to Christmas Day. Zander looked a little down when he saw that he only received two gifts to open.  One from his Aunt Sara, the other from Grandpa Paul & GiGi, and Aunt Kathy & Uncle Jeff.   He opened the noisy gift carefully, I had inserted some decorative marbles which slid around and rattled noisily.  He laughed at the marbles, and instantly made a connection between them and the jars of marbles they use at home for good behavior.  Then he lifted the note.  Read the front.  And opened it.  Scratching his head, he read and re-read the clue.  He headed into the spare bedroom, where there isn't a bed, so I knew he was stumped.  Everyone in the room tried to help him, and finally he ventured into our bedroom and started tearing the bed apart.  Fortunately I was there to snap a couple pictures.

He finally made it to the side of the bed where the guitar was waiting patiently for it's new owner.  He pulled it from it's hiding place and smiled from ear to ear.

Hugs all around for his new guitar.

My son brought an amp so he was able to play with it a little.

 How fun!

I really thank the Lord for blessing my life with such an awesome grandson!
